Artist:Neverland Ranch Davidians The Neverland Ranch Davidians may conjure visions of a roll neck wearing, bowl cut sporting cult, but their self titled album is taut muscular funky rock, built around huge guitar riffs and seismic drum patterns. The name which references MJ the king of pop and Waco's David Koresh drags its finger nails deliberately down the blackboard of popular culture.
It's a brave move opening with an instrumental and "The Gospel" is a muscular, slow burning opening statement. It's almost throat singing drone notes, washes of guitar noise and fiery chords take some beating. "Rat Patrol" is an up-tempo triumph, imagine a pill popping Jim Morrison fronting a greasy Lynyrd Skynyrd. Max Hagen's metronomic but funky drums run through the album, locking the Hendrix Experience like "Fat Back" as Tex and Will Bentley trade guitar licks and barbs. "Aqua Velveteen" has the off kilter swagger of Velvet Underground's The Gift, a 60s Hendrix chorus and loads of attitude. "Solid Monkey Blues" is a dark take on early 70s Jimmy Miller produced Rolling Stones, with the woo woo's and Tex Mosley's vocals riding on slabs of Link Wray sized guitar. "Butt's In My Beer" is a stuttering, infectious instrumental, imagine a grungy Wray power chording through a surf music track. "Boys Don't Cry" sets that swagger against a tender lyric, the music is raw and hot but the harmonies are tight and sweet. "Stigmata" has a killer beat, and slow high torque guitar. Tex's lyrics are dark, full and potent over a deconstructed fuzzy guitar solo. Lyrics to the dark "Knee On My Neck" don't pull any punches as the song flips from a Syd Barrett era Floyd chorus to a searing rock roar. The chiming guitar intro on Ray Charles' "I Believe To My Soul" is a complete revelation as, NBD 'Chicken Shack' their way through the most soulful potent Blues I have heard in a long time. Stunning and surprising to the end.
