I have to admit to this being a completely new name to me, but I felt drawn to it since I'm Helen and I know all our neighbourhood dogs!
Helen and the Neighbourhood Dogs have multiple EPs already released. 2026 sees them return with Anything That Moves, a short but strong 7-track album, blending folk traditions with Americana roots. Heavilyinfluenced by their Native East Anglia, the record has a real storytelling feel about it.
By the collaborative efforts of Shane Kirk, Helen and Stephen Constable (also delivering standout work on 12-string guitar),the sound feels simultaneously multi-layered yet simple.
At times, the musical sound is very rich, thanks to a combination of fiddle, flute, banjo, keys, guitars and even bazouki.
A particular highlight belongs to the collaborative work with guest artist Tony Winn on track Elephant (which is not what I was expecting and features clever, abstract lyrics about elephants. Constable's guitar hooks you in, followed by the lyrics and vocals. Songs such I'm Not That Kind of Girl, Songs From, the Blue Room and the rather beautiful story piece, Hollow Man, showcase the band's versatility.,
Overall, the album, whilst short, is a thoroughly enjoyable, half-hour experience well worth your time. I will have a delve back into their earlier EPs to see and hear what I may have missed prior to Anything That Moves.
