FolkLaw are an exciting Folk Rock band whose massive eleven piece line up delivers a full and punchy sound. On the title track Helen Harper's piccolo adds a whistle like Celtic quality over Gaz Hunt's busy percussion. With either Bryn Williams or Lyndon Webb's tasty guitar putting the Rock in Folk Rock. "Road To Donegal" is a more fully Irish flavoured romp. "About You" is a more thoughtful love song with great vocals, softened by Nick Gibbs' fiddle and Helen's flute. That soft quality runs through the Folky late Fairport like inclusive "Shire Man" and bouncy "Endlessly Thinking". This isnt just energetic feel good music, amongst the band are some strong vocalists and fine songwriters. "Burn" written by Gaz Hunt and Nick Gibbs, is a case a point, its dexterous playing, the harmonies, lyrics and arrangement, make it feel like a cover. "Fighting For Charlie" is a very solid traditional sounding song that gives lush mid 70s Steeleye Span a run for their money.
Pastoral and gentle sounding "Right To Roam" is a more contemporary protest song. Gentle observational protest pops up in the light hearted but thought provoking "Bookshop". Superb "He Dances" wrestles the Folk flute from that Seed drill guy who stands on one leg and mixes in brass and an audience pleasing reggae beat and chorus. With a great band chorus the protest continues as "In Old England" borrows themes from "Hard Times Of Old England" but bounces it along on that irrepressible Folklaw Folk Reggae Rock beat. "Hope Is Still Alive" seethes with some of the foot friendly vim and energy of The Men They Couldn't Hang or The Waterboys , but the anthemic words are carried a sweetened by frenetic feel good Folklaw.
Great album by a great band.
