Driving Mrs Satan Driving Mrs Satan
Album: Late Ever After

Based in Naples, like their French counterparts Nouvelle Vague, guitarist/bassist Giacomo Pedicini and singer Claudia Sorvillo specialise in genre reworked covers; however, rather than the former's wider and more eclectic choices and styles, their focus is on mostly acoustic reimaginings of heavy metal songs.

Working with an array of musicians on different instruments, this is their third album and features more material from their regular go tos of AC/DC, Motorhead, Metallica and Iron Maiden. Having previously dipped into the Black Sabbath well, they open here with one of Ozzy's, a pizzicato, dreamy, near chamber folk take on 'Breaking All The Rules' complete with spoken word samples before launching into a whisperingly sung driving, drums-led remodelling of 'Ace Of Spades with some sterling tremolo electric guitar work. Bass laying down the rhythm, Metallica's 'Creeping Death' gets a choppy pulsing urgency with an infectious almost Latin sway undercurrent. Musical colours expand with the arrival of organ and folksy mandola and mandolin on a fragile, intimately sung rendition of Iron Maiden's 'The Trooper', then 'Motorbreath', one of Metallica's lesser-known thrashes, transforms into an almost courtly undulating glide across the Latin dance floor. Francesco Di Cristofaro introduces accordion to a rhythmically pulsing and nervy dance through AC/DC's 'Let There Be Rock' and hangs around to squeeze it the final two cuts while also contributing flute to a moody sensual ethereal sway through Sabbath's 'Heaven And Hell' which also features Pericle Odierna on trumpet, trombone and clarinet, closing up with Charles Ferries adding his flugelhorn to Iron Maiden's 'Only The Good Die Young', hesitant piano and Sorvillo's breathy vocals bringing a melancholic delicacy to the brutal and desolate lyrics giving it almost a showtune ballad feel.

Next time round, they might want to expand their horizons to take on other sources such as Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Rainbow and, if they're up to the challenge, Slipknot, but for now you really should get behind their wheel.
