Daphne's Flight is a diverse group of five singer-songwriters from the UK who have released a new album called Love is the Weapon of Choice. The original members were Christine Collister, Melanie Harrold, Julie Matthews, Helen Watson and Chris While. After a long break, they reformed in 2017. However, in 2022, Christine Collister left the band for personal reasons and was replaced by Miranda Sykes.
A strong group of women, with strong musical backgrounds, sending out into the world ten songs with strong themes - themes as varied as stories of family and the ordination of women in church and the children of the stolen generations, with all kinds in between. Despite seeming mismatched, the themes fit together to create something powerful and emotive.
Taking their turns with lead and backing vocala and contributing their various instruments to the mix, they create a musical tapestry weaved from folk, jazz and other sounds along the way.
It is a very interesting collaboration and a very interesting offering, which is more than worth a listen, as a social commentary aswell as a piece of music. In fact, it piqued my interest so much that I took a break to find out more about the stolen generations and talk to my friend, a vicar, about female ordination. Not many CDs have done that!
