Bryony Griffith And Will Hampson

Sometimes you really don't need fancy adornments, less really can be more. Husband and wife duo Bryony Griffith and Will Hampson have delivered an album that is so sparse, it's almost raw. The whole album feels studio live and in many ways it's the perfect medium to present English traditional music. Folk music may have been collected by the likes of Vaughan Williams and Cecil Sharp, but it wasn't really performed by them. "Lady Diamond" is as hard and beautiful a release as the name might suggest, simply cut and absolutely sharp.

If you're looking for some dirty, dirty blues, look no further, Samantha Fish's new album should satisfy those initial cravings, though you'll probably want to come back for more. Hot on the heels of the Ruf Records Blues Caravan Tour and the associated "Girls With Guitars" album with Dani Wilde and Cassie Taylor, comes "Runaway" an album that is all Samantha and her band. From the off she's out to give the impression that 2011 is going to be the year she gets the blues world to stand up and take notice, I certainly did. This is straight blues rock with no filler.

Pretty much the founding fathers of acid croft, Peatbog Faeries show that there's still plenty of innovation to be had in giving traditional folk techniques a dance twidt. Combining ancient and modern in playing and instrument combinations. "Dust" is a high energy album that will really get your feet moving, unless you're deda in which case it'll be a good test. Fatea Award winning uillean pipes player, Jarlath Henderson gets to guest on the album. This is good time party music that is the aural equivilant of turbo charging a Peugeot 206.

Husband and wife duo, Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johhny Irion deliver their first 'adult' album in five years. Since "Exploration" the pair have added a couple of kids to the Guthrie legacy and released a children's album "Go Waggaloo". "Bright Examples" is a return to the country-rock sound that saw them establishng themselves on the other side of the pond and takes in tributes to the likes of The Everyly Brothers in the sound as it delivers a really upbeat feel and tight harmonies. This is an album from a couple that seem to be enjoying life and want to share the fun.

Anglo-Canadian, London based combo, Roosevelt Bandwagon, have delivered an album that would do the rust belt proud, if they were on that side of the pond. This feels like an old time working man's album, when a man felt proud to have his hands covered in grease an if life threw something at him that knocked him down, he did his best to struggle to his feet and get on with it again. "Jobless Men Keep Going" is a hard times album, a mix of heartfelt anger and respect for the people that took to the tramp in order to get work whilst the banker got richer at home.

Cheyenne Brown Harp

As you might deduce from the title, "Parallel Latitudes" pays tribute to the spread of Celtic music around the top of the world and takes in Cheyenne Brown's journey the opposite way as she migrated from Alaska to Scotland. Unusually, Cheyenne uses the harp as te primary method of getting that story across. It works remarkably well, there's not enough attention given to the harp as four and six stringed instruments have, in recent years, generally been at the forefront. It gives the album a different sound that sets it apart from it's peers.

Regardless of style, there are a lot of singer-songwriters that sound a little bit emo, Listen Lisse's cup positively overflows with self assured attitude. Here is an artist that sounds comfortable in her skin and is more than happy to infuse her music with that attitude. "Sunset Over Cairo" shares it's heritage as much with the hey days of punk as it does with folk drawing out the best of each genre to deliver a well thought out album that lashes out when it want's/needs to. This is Listen Lisse's third album and her stature as a songwriter just keeps growing and growing.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela

Rodrigo Y Gabriela are one of those artists that I really prefer to catch live and if that's not possible, then the next prefence has to be their live albums over their studio ones. "Live In France" features the previous studio album "11:11" extensively and quite simply leaves it struggling in its wake. This is a recording that not only captures the dynamic fireworks and interactions of two consumate performers, it then layers the atmosphere on top so you can hear music and fan building off each other to create a sound and feeling that you couldn't get in a studio, well not without massive crowd.

It really is surprising that this is the first joint venture album from two of folk's great troubadours. Both came out of Ireland, South and North Respectively, and moved to other parts, Canada and Australia, but since 1998 they've been having a regular meet up to write songs and watch "Trailer Park Boys". Somehow until now they just haven't gotten around to the going into the studio and recorded an album together. Listening to this it sounds like we've had thirteen years of lost opportunities and will hopefully have a new annual event to look forward to.

2011 is a vintage year for old timey bluegrass music from both sides of the pond and Old Sledge seem to be doing their best to lay down a few bottles. "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" is an album that revels in the simplicity of it's construction, simple string arrangement, great harmonies and some stunning solos, both vocal and instrumental. Male and female vocalists expand the song selections considerably. Standards like "Liza Jane" and "Bonapart Crosses The Alps" switch with contemporary songs, but it's the band's version of "St James Infirmary" that sets this a light.

Even if you didn't know Beoga were a predominently instrumental band, the title "How To Tune A Fish" should offer a clue or two. My first encounter with Beoga was at Cambridge back in 08 and was impressed enough to catch them again during the festival. They had just released their second album "Mischief" and this is the second album in the intervening years and one of their strongest. It's got a dance feel to it, but the band haven't made that the be all and end all, they've given themselves enough space to ensure that they playing and arrangements have enough space for feel.

Colchester based singer-songwriter draws on a number of genres across the acoustic spectrum, including jazz, blues and even a touch of ska for his "Tell The Worry Dolls" album. Similarly he employs a number of tricks such as call and response to really grab your attention and make sure he keeps hold of it. The result is a strong and fascinating album that seems to sit just outside of time, feeling like it absorbs the past and yet definitely is of the present. It's one of those album that gives a lot, but gives it slowly at different times on different listenings.
