Raised on a diet of classics like The Bothy Band and Planxty, Realta are a Belfast based six piece multi instrumental band with their own take on traditional music. "Skiddo" is uptempo showcase for Dermot Moynagh's skilled percussion and bodhran and the twin Uilleann pipes and whistles of Conor Lamb and Loic Blejean. With some of the mystic electronic fizz of The Afro Celt Sound System, Realta's "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" is an ethereal delight. Traditional and modern blend with electric keyboards, pulsing beat, whistles and the massed vocals of the band and guest Cathy Jordan. "Johnny D's" tune set is again uptempo and full of twists and turns with Dermot's nimble banjo duelling with the pipes and whistles. "Mulroy Boy" is a softly played traditional leaving song, with fine vocals from Dermot, Myles McCormack and Deidre Galway and atmospheric instrumental support from the band. Strong playing runs through "The Kitty Cat Slip Jigs" set, with powerful bodhran and dancing whistles. A complete contrast to the ethereal Whistle and Pipes on "Thing Of The Earth" a song by vocalist Myles, featuring too fine double bass from Mulholland.

"Red Rocks" is a slower cinematic instrumental inspired by a hiking visit to Colorado's Garden Of The Gods. The nimble interplay between tune writer Deidre's guitar and the whistles is a delight. "Up And About In The Morning" opens with a spirited Uilleann pipes duet with a player in each ear, moving through beautiful Whistle and bouzouki playing. The band deliver a surprising and inspired take on Dylan's "The Times They Are Changing", softening the 'traditional' arrangement with washes of Realta alongside Mykes sensitive vocals. "Ormond Sound" is a final traditional tune set, percussive banjo and bodhran are to the fore as the band close in full flight with a classic piping tune.

THING OF THE EARTH, wrapped in a cover that is part stained glass, part papercut, is the sound of Realta offered fast and furious alongside softer and reflective. Six members and an array of instruments means the songs and traditional music is richly played and lush.
