Las Lloronas is a trio of talented musicians from several nations that have come together to produce the kind of raw and honest music that really gets under your skin. The trio started off as street musicians, uniting around their passion for sociology, activism and art. Out of the Blue is the follow up to the very well received debut Soaked which came out in 2020, and while their writing may have matured, their unique sound is very much still present.
Out of the Blue cannot really be described as a collection of songs, or an album in the traditional sense. In truth it is hard to categorise. Perhaps the only way to put it as that Out of the Blue is art. The tracks are predominately built around intimate and multilingual poetry, though there are also times when there seems to be something more random at play. Las Lloronas almost give the impression that the music bursts out of them fully formed, as if they are discovering it at the same time as their listeners.
Of course that is very far from the truth given the vocal harmonies that permeate throughout. While the tracks have that incredible raw quality to them, there is not a wasted note or a discordant sound from start to finish. Out of the Blue never really settles into a consistent pattern, instead choosing to meander and drift along in fluid fashion. It's a journey of twists and turns, but one that never loses the listener. Such is the richness and warmth of the vocal harmonies in particular, you can't help but get lost in the sonic soundscapes the trio conjure up.
While there are many albums you can dip in and out of, and pick out certain tracks to listen to, Out of the Blue feels like one of those albums you really need to listen to from start to finish. There are a couple of standout songs however. Run features perhaps the most impressive vocal harmonies, and there is something utterly enchanting about Naranjos which is entirely in Spanish. Little Poets is gorgeous too.
Las Lloronas have created a sound that is grounded in the folk music of western Europe, but brings in so many other elements that it feels entirely unique. Out of the Blue is full of vibrancy and colour, while never failing to acknowledge the lurking darkness. Most of all though, Out of the Blue is an emotional experience, and one that stimulates reactions on an unconscious level, regardless of whether you understand the lyrics or not. It's an emotional experience you'll want to relive again and again.
