Darlingside Imagine, if you will, from some parallel dimension, a previously unknown but stand-out song from the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.
Let it couple the harmonic ethereality typical of that longplayer with a hard-edged loop of Canadian step percussion.
Add in an extended metaphor of life as a progression from the light blue of the shallows to the dark indigo of the ocean deeps.
And there you have it: the advance single from Darlingside's forthcoming album Fish Pond Fish.
Ocean Bed has a lyric that could stand alone as a poem to taking life as it comes, breathing in new experience and tasting it in its entirety, for (the singers trust) there will be world enough and time.
Not for them the frenzied rush through the world of our short-lived canine companions:
"Ghost dog running down the rocky edges
To the churned up under of the ocean bed
No, I'm not running, and I never have been
To the true blue bottom where the light ends"
Pure poetry, beautifully sung, and, were I Brian Wilson, I'd be proud to claim it as my own.
Darlingside have been compared to David Crosby and the Byrds, and, yes, I can hear where that's coming from - Crosby's The Lee Shore is particularly evoked. But I'm definitely hearing this more as Son-of-Brian-Wilson material, and liking it all the better for that.
A very talented band, and, if this single is typical, the album will be well worth checking out
