XXV, recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World studios, the morning after a tours end, is a no overdubs, in the room together celebratory 10th album. Marking as the title suggests a quarter century of the ever evolving instrumental band.
The "Jukebox" opening set lives up to band moniker of Blazin' Fiddles with fast and furious bowing, as well as a second melody that sounds like distant voices and some energetic piano from guest musician Angus Lyon. "Strone Point" is a slower, contemplative piece, again the fiddles weave around each other, layering sounds. Beautiful jazzy keyboard playing from Lyon leads into the faster second tune, a band favourite "Anne Lacey's" with Anna Massie on guitar. "Call Her Mum" is a sensitive ballad type tune with space for every fiddle, guitar and piano note to be savoured in a, ethereal quiet storm. "Devil" raises the temperature and tempo slowly through "Devil's Polska" the first tune. Fiddles, guitar and piano build up a wonderfully percussive pulse into a similarly rhythmic "Washington State Park". "Maguire And Patterson" and "Goodfellows" show the band's other strength with sensitive almost classical cinematic music. The band play through "Maguire And Patterson, the first waltz played at Angus' wedding with all the emotion and pathos of a big screen romance. "The Road To Skye" may be geographically locked to Scotland, but the music is infused with some of the yelp and twang of Country music, played with band's customary polish and spirit. The final set "Coia-Iararaidh / The Lollipop Waltz / Wlie's Auld Threws / Maurice Lennon's Tribute To Larry Reynolds" encompasses poetry, a quirky waltz and some ancient and modern reels". Across the long set there is some graceful but spirited band playing and more surprising linking guitar and piano parts.
With XXV Blazin' Fiddles present a treat for the feet and the ears.
