Soho is an area of London that still has an association with music, but not as much as it used to. Any number of clubs gave opportunities to a who's who of names and the bohemian atmosphere of the air gave freedom of expression. Soho Folk and Roots are attempting, very successfully to try to recreate that atmosphere in an intimate venue that will hold perhaps 30 people, in the basement of a barber's shop right in the heart of Soho. Totally unplugged, and with a bar tucked away, there's a warmth and intimacy to the venue and with no stage there's a real eye to eye connection to the musicians.
It's the perfect location to enjoy Jason McNiff , one of those amazing troubadour musicians writing lyrical songs telling stories, but also with a deep appreciation of the works of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan who've obviously been an influence on him. Jason, FATEA Male artist of the Year 2024 gave us his own songs from a back catalogue that goes back a long way, including the latest, "Everything's A Song", which is a terrific album. The title track is worth getting the album for alone and "Chef Song" has a real story to it. There were songs from the upcoming album "Ten Blue Songs" due out later this year. The first single from it, "Workin' Nights" has a blues / jazz feel to it, being the story of a couple where he works nights and she works days. It's a very human story.
Jason's a skilled finger pick guitarist with a voice full of emotion and that's all he needs to put on a great show. There's no complex floor box, just real talent and ability. Jason plays mostly around the south coast so it was great to catch him on an all too rare visit to London. He will be back in London in October, at The Green Note, for a launch show and that date is already pencilled in the diary.
